October Update from FilmOntario, October 11, 2016

Federal Digi CanCon Consultation Update
The Honourable Eleanor McMahon, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, hosted a roundtable for industry stakeholders on September 28th to seek input on how the province of Ontario can support the cultural industries in the federal consultation on Canadian cultural policy. Several FilmOntario board members and I attended the meeting, which also included stakeholders from across the cultural industries. The discussion was wide-ranging, covering issues from a variety of sectors, and the Ministry indicated they are interested in having further input on specific issues from the sector. We are currently considering how FilmOntario can best contribute to this review.

The federal Minister of Canadian Heritage, Mélanie Joly, will be hosting an invitation-only industry roundtable in Toronto on Wednesday, October 12. If you have not received an invitation, you can participate in the consultation via Facebook Live by registering here.

We will keep you posted on further activities regarding the consultation, but please don’t hesitate to make your own voices heard. And let me know if you have concerns or suggestions you would like to bring forward.

Federal Budget 2017 Consultations
On Thursday, September 29, I attended a Federal Budget consultation with Minister of Finance Bill Morneau and his staff. The focus of the discussion was on how to ensure that the Arts and Culture industries are best positioned to support job growth and creation in Budget 2017. I spoke about the importance of stability in the business environment for the screen-based industries and maintaining federal financial incentives, particularly the tax credits.
