January 29 FilmOntario Update

2019 Provincial Budget Consultations

This morning at 9:00 FilmOntario representatives will be appearing before the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs as part of their consultations on the 2019 Provincial Budget. You can watch a livestream of the appearance here. The main focus of our submission will be the economic impact of the province’s screen-based sector and the need for stable and effective tax credits so that our industry can continue to grow.

As part of our presentation, we will be relying on the results of our Economic Profile, which you first heard about at the 2018 AGM. The Profile highlights that every $1 million spent on tax credits creates 109 direct and spin-off FTEs and $7.4 million in provincial GDP, and predicts that the industry will grow to $2.1 billion in direct spending by 2022.

Ontario Creates Call for Applications – Film Fund

The Ontario Creates Film Fund will open for applications at the end of January, with a revised set of guidelines available at that time. The first of three deadlines for the production stream of the Fund will be on March 4, 2019 at 5:00 pm.

There have been some administrative updates to the program for the 2019-20 funding year, so potential applicants are encouraged to review the highlights here and review the new guidelines carefully when they are available.
