February 15 FilmOntario Update

2019 Provincial Budget Consultations

As reported previously, FilmOntario has been an active participant in the 2019 Provincial Budget Consultations. On January 29, Managing Director Cynthia Lynch, Board Co-Chair Jennifer Jonas and Board Member David Rumley appeared before the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs as part of their budget consultation. Our presentation on the economic impact of the province’s screen-based sector and the need for stable and effective tax credits was well-received by both government and opposition members of the Committee. You can read a full transcript of our appearance here.

Cynthia also participated in a consultation session with Minister of Finance Vic Fedeli, hosted by the Mississauga Board of Trade, earlier in the month. Our final written submission to the Minister can be read here. While the date of the Budget has not yet been announced, we will continue to be in touch with political staff and MPPs from all parties as part of our ongoing advocacy efforts. If you have any questions about the submission or the Budget process, please don’t hesitate to be in touch.

Stewart Aziz Memorial Scholarship

As many of you know, industry veteran Stewart Aziz passed away in December 2018. In order to honour his memory and his contributions to the industry, a scholarship fund has been set up at Humber College, to be awarded annually to a student in the Film and Television program. Stewart was a Humber College alumnus, and was recognized with the Humber Cinematography Award in 1983.

For more information about the scholarship, and how you can contribute, please see the Humber College website. All of us at FilmOntario would like to extend our condolences to the Aziz family for their loss.

Ontario Creates Upcoming Deadlines

The Ontario Creates IDM Fund, Concept Definition and Production, is now accepting applications. There are two deadlines for this funding year: April 8 and August 26, 2019, both by 5:00 pm. Please see the program website for complete guidelines and application requirements.

And a reminder that the Ontario Creates Film Fund is now open for applications, with a revised set of guidelines. As there have been some administrative updates to the program, please be sure to review them before submitting your application. The first of three deadlines this year for the production stream of the Fund is on March 4, 2019 at 5:00 pm.
